Online Learning

Teaching Coach: Dr. Corinne Wieben

Like many instructors, my first real online teaching experience came when I pivoted from face-to-face to online instruction in Spring 2020. I volunteered to continue teaching online to help fulfil student demand, and I鈥檝e spent the last five semesters (and two summer sessions) providing both synchronous and asynchronous online instruction at all levels from surveys to graduate courses. In that time, I鈥檝e learned that, with the right tools and planning, instructors can make online courses uniquely engaging, interactive, accessible, and equitable for a wide variety of students.

In an increasingly digital world, students are often more comfortable interacting in an online setting, and many prefer to encounter information in digital rather than physical form. From embedded media to links to helpful information, online course materials can engage students鈥 attention and help develop their curiosity about any subject. Whether you鈥檙e planning a synchronous, asynchronous, or hybrid course, you don鈥檛 have to be a technical wiz to master the basics of effective online instruction. With helpful Canvas templates, powerful tools, and new online content and apps appearing every day, the possibilities of online instructional design are limited only by our imaginations.
