The University of Northern Colorado’s Performing and Visual Arts Department will be opening the show “That Day in Tucson” this weekend. The themes of this show include LGBTQ+ Discrimination, mental health, and gun violence.
Luke Avalos-Gonzalez, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, takes a lead role in this production under the direction of the guest director Juilo Agustin.
“I play actor one, or Daniel,” Avalos-Gonzales said. “I relate a lot to Daniel myself; we share ethnicity. I'm pan myself but have been queer and gay for quite a bit.”
Based on real events from the 2011 Tucson shooting, the play has a real and raw pretrial of these topics. This allows for a unique opportunity for a dialogue to start and to promote an understanding.
“These are real people,” Avalos-Gonzalez said. "We are dropping real times, real dates, real facts about the shooting and what happened before, during, and after. So, we have to strike this balance of where the truthful retelling is versus how we convey that information.”
“That Day in Tucson” will be performed at the Norton theater from Thursday Feb. 6 through Sunday Feb. 16, with multiple showtimes available. For more information and ticket details, visit
