Black History Month at Ƶapp

As Black History Month ends, it’s important to know black history is not confined to a single month and impacts the University of Northern Colorado community every day. Students and faculty at the Marcus Garvey Center hosted several events throughout February to highlight black excellence and history. However, students emphasize that Black History Month serves a much larger purpose. It provides education on the past and its lasting impact on the future.

“You're always going to be learning about black history,” said Busi Chimembe, a sophomore human services major. “No matter what you’re talking about its always going to have something to deal with Black history.”

The lifting of diversity, eqity and inclusion initiatives under the Trump administration has sparked concerns about the future of DEI on campus. Many fear that without these programs, essential resources for minority students and faculty will be gone, leading to a loss of representation, belonging and funding for cultural organizations.

Ƶapp students and staff worry that these changes could have long-term effects on campus inclusivity. Without structured DEI efforts, cultural spaces like the Marcus Garvey Center may face challenges in sustaining their programming and support systems for Black students.

The question remains: How will Ƶapp move forward in ensuring that Black voices, stories, and achievements continue to be recognized and celebrated beyond February?
