Student Showcase Gives Students a Chance to Shine

The annual Student Showcase took place last Thursday, where students had the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and hard work.

The showcase featured performances, visual art, posters and presentations. Students spend upwards of a semester on their project. The showcase was student led and allowed for students to take a look at what their peers have been doing.

The showcase was hosted by the McNair program and honors. The goal of the events is to give students an opportunity to grow their research and public speaking skills.

Yasmin Bruman Martinez, a second-year bio-chem major, explained how the showcase has helped her find out what she enjoys.

“So, I really enjoyed the molecular aspect of this project,” Martinez said. “I would like to see what else I am interested in other than biology.”

Martinez enjoys the showcase because it allows her to receive feedback on her research and to reach a bigger audience. In Martinez’s research she found the opposite of what she set out to do.

“We were trying to under-express this gene, but it actually showed up to be overexpressed and more then double,” Martinez said. “So that was kinda surprising in my research cause we tried to do the opposite.”.

Sometimes this is the case and students are able to see what others did and how to continue the research from there. Martinez plans to continue her research at the next Student Showcase.
